Summaries
An American finds refuge during the 1937 Japanese invasion of Nanking in a church with a group of women. Posing as a priest, he attempts to lead the women to safety.
In 1937 China, during the second Sino-Japanese war, a mortician, John (Christian Bale) arrives at a Catholic church in Nanjing to prepare a priest for burial. Upon arrival he finds himself the lone adult among a group of convent girl students and prostitutes from a nearby brothel. When he finds himself in the unwanted position of protector of both groups from the horrors of the invading Japanese army, he discovers the meaning of sacrifice and honor.
In 1937, mortician John Miller arrives at a Catholic church in Nanking which is under protection of the Red Cross to bury the local priest during the Japanese attack on China. He finds only student girls and one young boy in the convent and decides to spend the night. Soon a group of women from the red light district break in, seeking a sanctuary. The next morning, a Japanese platoon breaks into the church and tries to rape the girls. John wears a priest costume and poses as a priest. He unsuccessfully tries to stop the Japanese, but realises he needs either to leave Nanjing, or stay and help protect the girls.
